Sermon - “The Truth About Change”

Sermon by Markus Watson on April 13, 2008

This is the fourth sermon in the series titled “MythBusters”

Theme - Change is hard. And, yet, change is something that everyone deals with every day of their lives. For us, the challenge is to adapt to the changes that are thrust upon us. Paul and the early church set us a good example of adapting to change when God made it clear to them that, because of Jesus, even Gentiles were now welcome in the family of faith. Thank goodness the early church adapted!

The movie below was used as an illustration to demonstrate that that God is still at work in our culture today.

Sermon - “The Truth About Pain”

Sermon by Markus Watson on April 6, 2008

This is the third sermon in the series titled “MythBusters”

Theme - Everyone suffers. Everyone experiences pain. And like David in the Bible, everyone spends some time living in a “cave.” The good news is that God does his best work in caves. God is always there with us even when it seems like He’s light years away.

The movie below was shown immediately following the sermon.

Our audio content is also available via a podcast from iTunes and via a RSS news feed.

Military Community Youth Ministries

Northminster, as part of its mission activities, supports Steve Chastain who is on staff with Young Life and serves with Military Community Youth Ministries (MCYM) in Europe. Steve is primarily working with the children of US and NATO personnel assigned to the Allied Joint Forces Command Brunssum (JFC HQ Brunssum). JFC HQ Brussum is located in Brunssum Netherlands.

Every year during spring break, a service opportunity is made available which is a growth opportunity for those that are regular participants in the MCYM or Club Beyond program. It is also as an outreach opportunity to unchurched or disinterested kids at the International School in Brunssum Netherlands and a significant outreach to the communities in which the service projects take place.

From March 23rd through March 30th, the service project took place in Presov, Slovakia. The following is a video consisting of scenes from Slovakia 208.

Steve also now has a blog called Logomanikos which is listed in the links section of this web site. Please check it out to see what Steve is up to.

Greetings from Clairemont Young Life!

730045143209_0_alb.jpg

Let me introduce myself, my name is Chelsea Knox! Formerly Chelsea Cartlidge. Married life is wonderful!

We are back in the swing of things with Young Life and Wyldlife clubs, University City and Madison High lunch clubs. Still waiting for the “in” at CPMA Middle school to start a lunch club.

Jonny Sherfy hopes to come on Student Staff in the near future, please consider becoming a monthly donor for him. (Click Here to area CA478.) For him to come on student staff, he will need to raise money for three months in advance. Jonny leads Young Life and Wyldlife, and also a Tuesday night boys’ Bible study.

Congratulations to Jessie Swann, a Wyldlife leader and junior at Madison High School. She just found out today that she was accepted to serve for a month at Woodleaf this summer! She hopes to be on Young Life staff in the future, and has really grown spiritually over the past year.

Camp is coming up! Wyldlife kids will go to Oakbridge July 3-8, Young Life kids to Woodleaf July 19-25. Leaders made a “no way” list a few weeks ago of kids we thought would never come to camp, but that we would pray for. Already 4 of our “no way” kids have signed up wanting to go to camp! I just got goosebumps… But like every year, already many kids are asking “How will I go to camp? I can’t afford it.” We want these kids at camp! Please consider sponsoring one of these kids to camp- fully or partially- everything helps! We will start having car washes this month to help kids with fundraising.

The Young Life San Diego County Region Auction and Drawing is coming up on May 4th! Dinner tickets are $60, or $70 at the door. Please contact me (619) 322-7586 if you would like to attend. From 4-6 is the Silent Auction and appetizers. Dinner and program will be from 6pm-8pm. Drawing tickets are $50, which goes to our area. These tickets make great gifts! Prizes are:

  • A week-long trip to Hilton Head, SC!
  • A trip to Kauai!
  • Airfare for two and overnight accommodations to San Francisco for a Nordstrom $1,000 shopping spree and lunch
  • Aspen Ski trip
  • Carnival Cruise
  • Two night stay at the Hotel Del Coronado
  • Plazma TV
  • Calloway golf irons
  • San Diego bay cruise- dinner for 10 on a private yacht for 4 hours
  • A day at the La Costa spa!

Our Prayer Requests:

  • Jonny Sherfy raise support to come on Student Staff
  • Starting CPMA lunch club
  • Money raised for camp
  • 100 Auction drawing tickets sold

How you can help:

  • Become a donor for Jonny Sherfy
  • Pray for our area
  • Sponsor a kid to camp, help them have the best week of their life!
  • Come experience an amazing evening at our Auction!
  • Purchase drawing tickets

God Bless you all,
Chelsea Knox

Director’s Corner–April 2008

preschool.gifSpring is here! We are so lucky to live in a part of the world where spring means no snow! Our classrooms are transforming as we speak.

I have a request/reminder about the sign-in/out books. Most of you are really good about signing in and out appropriately, thank you! Please remember that you need to be signing the time, not an x in the appropriate box for checking your child in and checking out. For example, if you drop off at 8:30 a.m., there is a box that has 8:30, please write the 8:30 in that box. This also applies when signing out your child. Please continue to sign out in the signature box you have always signed out, not on the line where the time is. I have attached an example to help you out. The State Licensing is requiring the time in the box and your signature. It is not an option. Also, it helps the office when totaling time for billing if you use the box instead of a random place to put the time. We have 140 sheets to review at the end of the month and it can become confusing for us.

I would like to thank an anonymous donor, who helped make it possible to paint the entire preschool during spring break. I know the poles and doors were obvious, but the entire school was painted, stucco was repaired and the trim was repaired and painted as well. It has been over 20 years since the preschool has been painted. Jeff Ostrowski gave the preschool an amazing price and his workers did an amazing job. We had over 5600 square feet that needed repairing and painting and they were able to do it in a week! I highly recommend his company to anyone who needs painting done now or in the future.

I want to remind parents, since it is now spring, if you would like a conference with your child’s teacher to chart their progress please ask for one. We don’t set up specific days for a conference; we leave it up to the parents to ask their teacher for one if they would like one. This is available the entire year.

We are working on classroom assignments for summer and fall. We will be sending out a letter at the beginning of June with classroom assignments for summer fun. Please note that school is going through June 24th and the picnic is on June 25th. For those of you who have been with us for awhile, this is a change from previous years. It is on the calendar we gave you at the beginning of the school year.

Our next big “event” is our Art Celebration night on May 19th 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. We have some special things planned, so please mark your calendars for this fun and memorable event. We had an amazing turnout last year and would love to see you all again this year.

I would like to thank all the parents who attended the pancake breakfast last month. What a beautiful day we had! This event was sponsored by Fred and Janet Schwend. They are both members of Northminster and Janet was the Director of the preschool for many years. We had a great turn out and the church members and Pastor Markus would like to thank all of the parents for attending.

The Director’s door is always open. Please stop by anytime if you have any questions, concerns or comments!
